Ironman Wrestling Tournament to Be Renamed in Honor of Founder Bill Barger

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (September 18, 2026) Walsh Jesuit High School and the Ironman Wrestling Tournament announced today that the nation’s premier high school wrestling invitational will be renamed The Bill Barger Ironman Wrestling Tournament in memory of the tournament’s founder and longtime Walsh Jesuit head coach, Bill Barger, who passed away September 14, 2026, after a long illness.

Barger founded Ironman in 1994 and built it into one of the most respected tournaments in the country. Now in its 32nd year, the event draws more than 800 wrestlers from 300+ schools across nearly 30 states each December and is widely regarded among the top in-season high school tournaments in the nation.

As head coach at Walsh Jesuit, Barger led the Warriors to eight state titles and four national championships during a six-year span. Beyond his record of wins, Barger was known across the wrestling world as a mentor who shaped the tournament’s identity as a proving ground built on toughness, integrity, and respect for the sport.

The new name will take effect beginning with the 2026 tournament, scheduled December 11-13 at Walsh Jesuit High School. Walsh Jesuit and tournament organizers also confirmed Walsh Jesuit will remain the host location of the Ironman through 2027, with plans beyond 2027 in development.

“Bill’s name has adorned our wrestling room for years, and it’s fitting that his name will now carry this tournament as well,” said Tim Grady, president of Walsh Jesuit High School. “For decades he poured himself into this event and into every wrestler who came through our program. His care for our students extended far past the wrestling mat, and that’s the man we’re honoring today.”

“Coach Barger set the standard for what this tournament would become; long before any of us understood how big it would get,” said Pete Zaccari, director of The Bill Barger Ironman Wrestling Tournament. “Coaches and wrestlers nationwide knew his name and respected what he built. This renaming ensures that legacy endures.”

The Ironman Wrestling Tournament will continue under its new name with the same format that has defined it for decades: a grueling three-day, two-division event—Ironman for boys and Women of Ironman—testing the top wrestlers in the country across 14 weight classes each.
